Green Feed - We have three types of oats

Type 1: Giant white oats (Magnum oats) Top yielding, chest height lots of leafs and good leafs size with a dense sward.

25% less sowing rate compared to other oats. Often sown with italian ryegrass. expected yield 13-15 tn/kg/dm.

Type 2: Black oats waist height lots of leaves with big wide leaves and medium density expected yield 12-14 tn/kg/dm.

Comments Green Feed - Harvest oats as the grain head forms. Oat grain adds little kg/dm so is not needed.

Once cut let lie 2 days at least so the water content in leaf can drain out before harvesting crop.

little fungal disease attack except crown rust must check broad leaf weeds at seedling stage.

Wholecrop Barley Comments - Although has some good disease resistant it does pay to put at least one fungicide disease application at growth stage 39 for especially scald. Southland Grain & Seed along with AGPRO NZ has formulated weed control at growth stage 24 for weeds mainly effecting Southland crops at a much reduced cost. Harvesting whole crop when it is at its cheesy dosy stage allowing grain to harden so the grain comes out undigested by the cow which is a very common mistake made by farmers. Wheat Whole Crop - Although wheat has larger yield in grain wheat takes 150-170 days to mature. More care is needed to prevent fungal attack.

Average yield of about 14-15 tn/kg/dm

although the M.E of wheat is 12.5 overall M.E including straw is 9.5 M.E

Triticale Whole Crop - Our main variety Forerunner has wide leaves and is very good yielding around 15-18 tn/kg/dm.

Maturity date is 170-190 days which is long compared to other wholecrop options.

With high content of fiber straw the total M.E is 9.5 including straw.

Triticale is mainly 50% ryecorn and wheat some new varieties of triticale have a 75% wheat cross for higher grain yield.
